CONCEPT ART MASTERCLASS 2011 - WITH IAN MCQUE

The 2011 concept masterclass was taken by Concept Artist and Assistant Art Director Ian McQue. Renowned for his wonderfully freelance paintings of dilapidated futures and floating ships, Ian has been working for years on more contemporary subjects for the legendary GRAND THEFT AUTO series of games at ROCKSTAR NORTH.

Ian demonstrated his entire process to an enraptured class over a magical few days. Starting by emphasising the importance of regular sketching, Ian took the attending artists out locally to find inspiration and texture from the world around them. Back in the studio he used this research as the basis for an imaginative spaceship sketch for the painting demonstration. Switching to Photoshop, the attending artists were treated to an overview and Q&A of Ian's painting technique: brushes, colour, composition, scale, texture, perspective and final polish. The class then sketched and painted their own work under Ian's watchful eye. Each artists work and portfolio was critiqued and their new work mentored - a fantastic learning experience for any artist. opportunity to witness a live painting demonstation from one of the UK's true concept art masters, followed by his in depth analysis of your own artwork and personal advice on how to take your skills to the next level. By demonstrating and mentoring a concept art assignment from a set brief, Ian takes you through each stage of his process. The course covers painting, sketching, perspective, composition, vehicle and character design, colour theory, and his experiences of work and finance as a freelance artist. Building on traditional art skills, and using real examples from actual projects, this packed weekend covers all the knowledge and techniques Ian's picked up in his many years of professional concept work creating environments, props, and characters for the industry's landmark products.
